Week 5
Trip to New York City
This week was the first of many of the New York art fairs. I traveled to NYC early on Thursday to visit the Frick Collection to see first hand what I had been reading about last week. The following day on Friday I met with Ms. Anstead at the Frieze Fair downtown. We went around the fair where numerous galleries had booths set up and saw how the art market works first hand. With Ms. Anstead’s guidance I learned a lot about popular artists, well established international galleries, specific dealers, and how different fairs operate within the art world.
We also attended some smaller fairs as well and I got to meet new gallerists and artists along with Ms. Anstead and see first hand how she interacts with dealers on behalf of her clients. I also attended a talk about the state of the art market toward the end of the day, putting faces and real people to much of the information I had read in the art market report.
Saturday and Sunday I did my visit to the JP Morgan Library and Museum as well as other galleries to familiarize my self with the art scene in the city. I also visited the Whitney Museum in NYC as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
