Week 6

End of New York Trip

On Monday I met with Ms. Anstead at TEFAF in the morning. We visited all the different booths at the fair. I learned a lot more about how the different galleries set up their booths, about how art provenance is tracked and also saw how transactions play out. Ms. Anstead taught me a lot about what types of art works are typically available at different galleries and the strategies that galleries deploy when they set up their booths. After the fair we went to the MoMA in NYC and I was let loose to explore the museum and learn more about what is popular in the art world and what kinds of things are a part of different museums’ collections. Finally I as instructed to visit a few auction houses, Christies auction house in particular and to see what kinds of work they had on display and how the auction preview works.

Tuesday was another day filled with visiting art museums and galleries. I went downtown to Chelsea where the majority of the galleries are in the city. I spent most of the day walking from gallery to gallery learning more about what galleries were offering, seeing how the display their art, and how they interact with guests. Overall I was familiarizing myself with the art scene in the city while also keeping an eye out for works that may be of interest to Ms. Anstead’s clients.
